Whilst a lot has been written about the benefits of Tort Law Reform, in the circumstances described in this story, would a basic policy limit of $5,000,000 be sufficient to rectify the damage caused by this explosion?

 

Two plumbers were installing a hot water system in a penthouse in Bondi Junction when a gas pipe exploded forcing mass evacuations.

More than 1000 people fled Bondi Junction's Eastgate Shopping Centre after the accident happened on the 29th floor of the apartment block next door.

NSW Fire Brigade crews were called to Spring Street at 12.41pm after reports of a gas line exploding on the roof.

A 23-year-old male is in a serious condition after suffering burns to 40 per cent of his body, with injury to his face, torso, arms and legs.

A 20-year-old suffered burns to 20 per cent of his body and was more stable. Both were breathing and fully conscious when they were taken by ambulance to St Vincent’s Hospital.

A third person, understood to be an elderly man, has also been injured but was treated at the scene.

Police now fear the wall of the building could collapse onto Spring Street or Edward Street and have blocked off traffic.
